Sugarplum Cafe Newsletter: February 2025

Sugarplum Cafe Updates

Heads up - next month I'll be at GDC! This is a huge game developer's conference in SF from March 15-23 and it means I'm bringing the Sugarplum Cafe demo with me. If anyone is gonna be around the city during that time and would like to help me test the game and look for bugs, please reach out to me at thelettergii@gmail.com! You don't need a GDC pass - we can probably set something up at a cafe or park.

In this month's newsletter we'll cover the following:

  • The Tea Room
  • Two new Ladies

The Tea Room

In last month's newsletter, I wrote about the two main rooms of Sugarplum Cafe: the kitchen and the main room. But there is another room you can unlock: the Tea Room!

This room is where you'll be able to host Tea Parties. As you may recall, inviting different combinations of guests may unlock different Tea Party themes, and these themed Tea Parties can unlock new Ladies. So this won't be the only possible tea set you'll see in the game!

I’ve had a few followers ask about cafe customization, and I would love to add different cafe themes to choose from - cottagecore, celestial, seasonal themes, etc. But because of the amount of art involved, it depends on how much interest this game gets. The best way to gauge interest right now is social media following/engagement, so I appreciate any support I can get!

Meet the Citrus Twins!

I also revealed two new Ladies! Lady Lemon is a social butterfly who loves spilling tea as much as she loves drinking it.

Lady Lime, her twin sister, loves mod fashion. In my head she's less chatty than Lady Lemon, but very fun and flirty nevertheless.

Gonna be honest, both of their intro quotes are works in progress. I'm trying to think of a good "spill the tea" pun for Lemon and a more creative 60s saying for Lime. ("Groovy" keeps coming to mind but I'm just not feeling it haha)
So I'm definitely open to suggestions for new sayings, if anyone has ideas!

Ending on a sweet note

I love talking about food, so I thought it'd be fun to end these newsletters with a different dessert. This month's sweet treat is orange cranberry scones from local baker SconeWild!

They show up at my local farmer's market every week and sell the best scones I've ever had. It's really easy for scones to be dry but theirs are never like that. I don't normally care for dried fruit, but the dried cranberries are like candy in this one. They also do a savory cheddar herb scone that's like Red Lobster biscuits but 100x better.

SconeWild is at both the San Mateo and Divisadero Farmer's Market, and deliver in Marin County. Check them out if you're close by!

Lastly, just a reminder that if you'd like to play an early version of Sugarplum Cafe now, you can support me on Patreon for as low as $2/month. The current version has about 3 hours of content, and it's nowhere near done!

But no worries if you can't join my Patreon right now - the best way to support me for free would be to spread the word or engage with my social media posts <3

See you all next month!
